4 Things to Consider When Choosing an Occasional Table
We bet you never thought there would be that many things to consider when you’re thinking of getting a new coffee, or occasional table. And we’re not even going to talk about the style or design because that’s up to your tastes and décor.
If for no other reason, making the right choice of occasional table is crucial because of the central place it holds in your living room suite. If your coffee table isn’t in balance with everything else in the room, the entire room might never really come together in its style and/or layout.
Now that you have an idea of its importance, here are just a few of the things you should consider when choosing an occasional able.
1. It’s Height
Yes, even the height of your table can make the difference between ‘fitting’ and not. Generally speaking, the surface of your table should be five to ten centimetres (one or two inches) below the highest seating surface of the surrounding furniture. That usually results in a table height of 40 to 45 cms, or eight to nine inches.
2. One, Two or More?
If you’ve ever used just a single occasional table with matching, permanently placed end tables, you probably had more than one occasion where you wished you had more tables. So, instead of getting a single coffee table, consider getting several smaller tables to add more versatility to your living room set up.
3. The Right Size
It’s tempting to get the biggest table possible if you entertain a lot and are always looking for surfaces for hors d’oeuvres or board games. But, like every other piece in your living room, your table needs to be in proportion to the room and your furniture.
4. Where it Sits
One of the factors that can influence the size of the table is its placement. While, generally speaking, your occasional table should be 30 to 45 cms (12 to 18 inches) from surrounding seating, if your room is larger or smaller, they may need to be somewhat closer or further away. Depending on the overall balance of the furniture and accessories in your room, the coffee table can be larger the further away it is from surrounding furniture and smaller the closer it is.
