Pillow Talk: How to Arrange Pillows on a Sofa
As springtime rolls around, change is in the air. But, there can be a downside to all the great transformations going on around you. While spring brings new blooms, longer days and more sunshine, your living room is going to look the same. The same as it was all winter, and last year too.
Of course, you can visit your favourite furniture store and buy a whole new set of living room furniture every year. But you probably have to move to a smaller place sooner than later to keep up that habit.
A better and more cost-effective option is to find ways to perk-up what you have. Inexpensive, surprisingly easy-to-do ways that give your living room almost as much of a pick-me-up as a complete redecorate.
And it can happen with something as simple as the pillows on your sofa.

5 Ways to Arrange Your Sofa Pillows
Whether you choose new pillows, recover the ones you have or keep them as they are, how you arrange them can make the world of difference.
- The Basic – Two big pillows on each end of the couch. If your sofa has a pattern or texture, try pillows of a solid contrasting colour. Solid coloured sofas are a great place for pillows with eclectic patterns. The Basic can also be used as a starting point for many of the other couch pillow configurations below.
- The Basic Pattern – Take the basic one step further by adding the same coloured or patterned pillows across the entire sofa.
- Create Layers – This is why we suggest large pillows for The Basic. It allows you to add progressively smaller pillows in front of them in different shades, patterns and palettes, according to your décor. Create as many layers as you dare.
- Vary Sizes, Shapes and Textures – As you build layers and variations onto The Basic, look for options to vary the pillow sizes, shapes and textures.
- Your Palette is Crucial – You might have to look up colour theory on the web, or put your inner interior designer to work here. But once you choose the right palette of colours and execute on it, the rest – textures, sizes and shapes – will fall into place.
