Decorating small spaces can be just as complicated and rewarding as decorating a house. With the following decorating tips, you’ll be able to visually expand the space and create focal points that take away from the small-space feel.
- Get Curvy – Especially in the connected living room and dining areas, using curved furniture pieces, like side tables and coffee tables offers two benefits. First, they take away from the boxy feel of the space and, second, they help improve the flow of people as they move between the dining room and living room.
- Lighten Up – Brightening up the décor can make the small square footage feel bigger. Try lighter wall paint colours, furniture and accessories like area rugs. For the evening, make sure you have a variety of lighting fixtures, including floor lamps and table lamps to fit different moods.
- Give the Windows a Treat – Standard-issue apartment curtain rods and blinds are not the most attractive window treatments. Opt instead for curtains to add some visual interest to the space.
- Shelve It – Considering the scarcity of space in an apartment, you’ll be looking for places to store things or display your momentoes. Adding more tables or floor-based shelving only takes away from valuable square footage. But adding floating shelves, particularly to open areas on the walls, gives you the storage spots you want without taking away any space. This can be a fun DIY project and you can add striking visual appeal by doing something like using glass tops for each shelf.
