6 Basics of Feng Shui for Furnishing Your Home
Even learning the basics of feng shui for furnishing your home can be difficult. Is there anything ‘basic’ about one of the Five Arts of Chinese Metaphysics, observing things as they relate to formulas and calculations, and that refers to architecture in terms of ‘invisible forces’ that connect the universe, earth and humans together. (Wikipedia)
So how’s the feng shui with your home furnishings going so far?!
Of course, we’re not going to do proper feng shui any justice in a single blog post. But, if we can’t really get into the science of it, we can let you know about some basics of feng shui that can help you introduce it to your home furnishing and decorating in ways that can make a noticeable difference.
A Basic Definition of Feng Shui
There’s no better place to begin than with the basics. Feng shui is the creation of harmony between your inner self and your surroundings. And don’t worry if you don’t ‘get it’ or only ever keep things at a basic level. Real feng shui isn’t easy, often taking many years to learn and it’s constantly evolving.
But that doesn’t mean you can’t benefit from learning more about it.
The Basics of Feng Shui for Your Home Furnishing and Décor
1. Declutter
This works on a number of levels. First, this isn’t just about clearing up your old mail, mobile devices, and snack trays. You may also have an abundance of accessories, curious and wall hangings, or simply too much furniture.
Clutter itself can be stressful. So, just like meditation can help ‘declutter’ your thoughts, decluttering your surrounding helps your energy. And if you are going to start throwing stuff out, start with things that have negative energy, like something from an old flame, a friendship gone bad or anything that reminds of something unpleasant.
2. Cool It
Not just by managing your anger either. Houseplants keep your home cool in summer and more humid in winter. And they reduce stress. In feng shui, certain houseplants reinforce the concept of inner growth and expansion.
3. Remember, Less is More
At this point, after you declutter and add some plants, it’s a good moment to remember that a basic concept of feng shui is ‘less is more’. So if you declutter to the point of keeping your home antiseptic, or you buy so many plants, you can’t find the door, then your feng shui will go out that door.
4. Open the Windows
It’s funny how we keep our windows closed all winter to keep out the cold, and all summer to keep out the heat. Feng shui tells us to integrate our lives and homes with nature. More natural light and fresh air can help you stay calmer, happier and more productive.
5. Soften the Surfaces
Look at it this way, if you lived in a concrete room, what would it do to your energy levels and spirit? In your home, uncovered hardwood floors can feel cold, but an area rug can add nurturing softness and warmth.
6. Start in the Bedroom
If you want to break down the process of transforming the feng shui in your home even further, you can start with a single room. If that’s the plan, start with the bedroom.
You spend at least one-third of your life there, although you’re asleep for most of that time. Your body and mind rejuvenate themselves when you’re sleeping. Your bedroom and bedroom furniture should be faithful to that spirit with a comfortable look and feel, and calm wall colours.
If nothing else, trying to improve the feng shui of your home can make it healthier, tidier and more comfortable.
