Tips for Furnishing and Decorating a Big Room
If you’re lucky enough to have a large living room, dining room or bedroom, you know it’s not without its own decorating and furnishing problems. While trying to fit large furniture into small rooms can be frustrating, not having enough furniture or having an ‘empty’ feeling in a room can be equally as problematic.
The real problem is that the solution isn’t as easy as it seems. You can’t just add more chairs, end tables and lamps.
If you have to furnish and decorate a large room, try some of the following tips.
1. Tall Plants
Large rooms are not just longer and wider, they are taller too. Tall potted plants fill up every dimension of the room. They add much-needed greenery to the room and help the room feel ‘decorated’ even if there is little else in it.
2. Wainscoting and/or Two-Tone Wall Colours
Having different colours or shades on the top and bottom of your walls takes the emphasis off of their height. If you’re not into wainscoting, you can simply mark a horizontal line around the entire room and paint different colours or shades above and below the line.
3. Sectioning the Room with Furniture
Large living rooms can be sectioned into different areas by using furniture to separate the space. Console tables behind couches, benches and day beds can all be strategically placed to create the new area.
4. Keep Furniture Off the Walls
One of the great treats in furnishing a large room is not having to push couches and chairs into tight corners. Set them up facing each other in front of the fireplace. Or put a games table in the middle of one of the areas you sectioned off.
5. Furnish the Walls
With furniture in the middle of the room, you now have the problem of large, bare walls. Again, console tables can come to the rescue against the wall, with some tall accessories. A pair of large, comfy accent chairs, around and end table or lamp, will also look handsome against a wall.
If you’re facing the problem of furnishing and decorating a large room, it could be worse: you could be trying to fit too much furniture into a smaller room!
